The Thai artist is inspired by the portrayal of Buddha during the Sukhothai period (1238 to 1583) , which was influenced by Sri Lankan monks. The Buddha images of this era featured such distinguishing characteristics as a flame over the head which itself was covered with finely curled hair. The oval face has high curving eyebrows, a hooked nose, a downward gaze, and a gentle smiling expression.
